Jennifer and Sue each endured many years of misdiagnosis\, incredible illness and began to heal after expensive treatment in the U.S. Their children and dog have Lyme too but the dog has made a full recovery. He is a driven and passionate grade 12 student at Oakridge secondary School\, who plans on attending Western University to pursue a career in health care. He is the humble recipient of the Pillar Community Leadership Award\, Thames Valley District School Board Award of Distinction\, and the Ontario Volunteer Service Award. Eleanor Park and Rachel Gall will each give a short talk about what has made them leaders in their school and community.\nWomen’s Canadian Club\, London has established the Emerging Leaders Awards to encourage leadership skills in Grades 10-11 students. Based on enrollment\, there are three awards of $250 available for students in the Thames Valley District School Board and one award of $250 available for the students in the London District Catholic School Board or the French schools: E.S. She was Instrumental with Rowbust in Dragon Boat Canada recognizing the Breast Cancer Survivor Division at the Canadian National Championships in 2010 and with Rowbust in the International Dragon Boat Federation recognizing the Breast Cancer Survivor Division at the Club Crew World Championships in 2014. She was eight-time Canadian National Champion in the Breast Cancer Survivor Division (2010 – 2017) and Club Crew World Champion in the Breast Cancer Survivor Division in Ravenna\, Italy 2014 and Adelaide\, Australia 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Dr. Jean Hewitt & ‘The Suffragettes’: A Century for Women” \nJean Hewitt has been a teacher\, leader and author in Canada and England for over fifty years. Her post-graduate work was completed at the University of Toronto and Wayne State University in Michigan. Her undergraduate work in Science was completed in England at the University of Leeds (1960)\, and in Canada at Western. Jean has held a variety of administrative positions in Education\, including Vice-Principal\, Principal and Superintendent. She has lectured at a number of universities\, including Western\, McMaster and Lakehead\, and she has served as a Senior Project Officer with the Ontario Ministry of Education in Toronto. Jean wrote the first script for the Famous Five suffragists in 2007. In 2013\, she formed a troupe of retired women in London to perform this script in the community as part of public education. Since then\, the troupe has gone on to perform in a number of venues and the repertoire has expanded to include some monologues on other famous Canadian women.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Maples for Vimy”. \nSydney Loyst is a 16 year old Laurier S.S. student. She has been in guiding for 12 years. Last spring her guide group leader was approached by “Maples for Vimy” to send some guides to plant maple trees in the small towns near Vimy Ridge\, France to honour the 100th year anniversary of the historic battle. Sydney volunteered to go. The maples that were planted by these young people will serve as\nliving memorials to those brave soldiers who fought at the battle of Vimy Ridge. Sydney is here today to tell us about that experience. \nHer hobbies besides guiding activities are photography and baking. She hopes to further her education at university in the nursing program.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Orphan 32” \nThanh Campbell was born in Vietnam and came over to Canada as part of the last flight out of Saigon in 1975 with 56 other orphan children. Thanh was adopted into the family of Rev. William and Maureen Campbell. In the recent past\, Thanh reunited with many of the war orphans that flew over with him back in 1975. In 2014\, Mr. Campbell was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Award\, a prestigious award presented by the Rotary to those whose efforts are commended in community building.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Dying to Explore: The Archaeology of Sir John Franklin’s Third Arctic Expedition” \nDr. Park has participated in archaeological fieldwork in Southern Ontario\, Yukon\, Northwest Territories\, and especially Nunavut. He has also been involved in research studying the early European exploration of that region from the 1800s through the 1930s. His research into the famous 3rd Franklin expedition goes back to its beginning in 2008. Since then he has been assisting the Nunavut Government in the land-based component of the archaeological research.

DESCRIPTION:Kevin Alexander is a Grade 7 student at Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts. This 12 year old has taken piano lessons since he was 3 years old with his grandmother\, Marlene Alexander. Kevin is a three time National Finalist and scholarship recipient at CMC (Canadian Music Competition). Kevin has won many trophies and scholarships at music competitions\, such as the London Kiwanis Music Festival\, Woodstock Music Festival and St. Thomas Music Festival. Kevin has been asked to represent various music festivals at OMFA (Ontario Music Festivals Association) and has placed 3rd\, 2nd and honourable mention in his various age categories. Kevin enjoys playing the piano at concerts and has had the pleasure of performing at the London Kiwanis Stars Concert as well as the St. Thomas Star Concert and the Woodstock Festival of Stars concert. Kevin is grateful for the generous scholarship offered by WCC and looks forward to sharing his musical passion with our members.
