DESCRIPTION:India and Clark are 16 years old\, and have been raising money to send kids from child-headed households to school in Malawi through an organization called “Turn The Tide” …since they were 10 years old! Through spaghetti dinners\, bake sales\, craft markets and other events\, to date they have raised at least $40.000. The funds raised have provided money for food\, provisions and education for 37 kids and the 12 widows who now oversee their care in an impoverished rural village in the province of Nasanje. In August\, 2019\, India and Clark went to Malawi for the first time. Their work and experiences there have changed lives – both those of the Malawi children and their own.

As a former Crown Prosecutor\, turned criminal defense lawyer\, Nick brings a unique perspective to the law and policies surrounding it. Nick has worked with Mr. Millar since 2015 and is currently the head of the Criminal Law department. Nick is an advocate for accessible cannabis and is often imparting cannabis related policy in Court. \nMr. Philip Millar is a pioneer in Canada for Medical Cannabis. He is at the forefront of a leading industry by being the CEO for Medical Marijuana Consulting. A former combat officer with the Department of National Defence\, Philip became a lawyer graduating from Western University\, joining the Crown Attorney’s Office with the Ministry of the Attorney General. DESCRIPTION:Dylan Baker is a sports-minded 13 year-old with a big voice. He plays baseball in the summer and is captain of the London Tecumsehs baseball club bantam team. His interest in sports led him to host his own baseball podcast\, along with his dad\, and he does Facebook broadcasts for the London Majors. In the winter months\, Dylan is the play-by-play voice for the home games of the Komoka Kings Junior B hockey team. CTV News London did a feature on him last summer\, and now we have the opportunity to meet Dylan in person. He will speak on “Breaking into Broadcasting” and his dream of becoming a full-time professional sports broadcaster.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Hill 70 Memorial Project” \nSusan Everett is a lifelong educator who began her career as a classroom teacher teaching young adolescents in Northern Ontario. After several years of teaching and leading teacher education seminars\, she moved into administrative roles\, including vice-principal and principal. Susan worked as a superintendent with the Ministry of Education and school boards. Throughout her career she believed passionately in the value of lifelong learning. \nSince her retirement she has volunteered in the community\, applying the skills and knowledge acquired throughout her career. Susan volunteered with Queen’s University as a community representative on the General Ethics Review Board and recently as a grants assessor with the Kingston Community Foundation. The opportunity to lead the national education program for the Hill 70 Memorial Project has been an unanticipated but welcome honour. Through the Project she has had the opportunity to work with educators across Canada and has gained a deep understanding of one of foundation events which led to Canada’s stature as a nation.

DESCRIPTION:Sydney Wakelin\, 17 years old\, attends Oakridge S.S. She has been a member of the Byron Believers for 9 years and recently fulfilled a surgical co-op placement at Victoria Hospital. She also worked as a literary facilitator working one on one with 20 children who struggled to read and she assisted in running community programs to promote literacy. Sydney is currently a Page with the London Public Library. She is also a volunteer in the Alzheimer Outreach Day Program.\nErica Butler\, 17 years old\, attends Oakridge S.S. She is a peer mentor and facilitates Social Justice and Culture for Learning groups at school. She hosted Oakridge’s first Female Empowerment Day and was able to raise enough funds to supply all female and gender neutral washrooms with menstrual products. Erica received the Student Lead Award and grade 10 Citizen Award. She holds the position of Student Trustee at the Thames Valley School Board. She is also a long time member of the Byron Believers.

SUMMARY:Sherry Pringle
DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Extraordinary Women\, Extraordinary Times” \nThe road to uncovering the life and death of an uncle she never knew\, killed when his ship was torpedoed off the coast of France in 1944\, led Sherry to write her first non-fiction book\, “All the Ship’s Men: HMCS Athabaskan’s Untold Stories”. After interviewing veterans and their families\, she compiled personal stories of the sailors at the centre of Canada’s largest naval disaster in WW11. As she began interviewing Canadian women\, the extent and diversity of women’s skills and contributions during wartime became apparent\, leading to over sixty individual stories. Currently she awaits publication of her first historical novel\, “The Whistle”\, and a documentary based on “Extraordinary Women”. Sherry is also an artist\, whose paintings grace the covers of her first book and museums and private collections. In 1966\, Mrs. Johnston completed her studies in physical and occupational therapy at the University of Toronto. Later\, she completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario\, a Master of Science at McGill University\, and obtained her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science at McGill University. She assisted her husband\, David Johnston\, during his seven-year Vice Regal mandate from 2010 to 2017\, at Rideau Hall\, Ottawa.

DESCRIPTION:Meriel Reed is a 17 year-old student at H.B. Beal Secondary School in London.  She suffers from a severe medical phobia and has had to learn how to cope with the debilitating fear that she undergoes with every medical experience.  Meriel loves to sing and act and has performed on stage for productions at the Palace Theatre and for the Grand Theatre’s High School Project. Meriel has been a Patient Ambassador for Children’s Hospital for the past 4 years and speaks regularly in that capacity about the help she has received at the hospital.  It was out of these experiences that she created her own charitable project\, “Gypsie”.

Jennifer and Sue each endured many years of misdiagnosis\, incredible illness and began to heal after expensive treatment in the U.S. Their children and dog have Lyme too but the dog has made a full recovery. He is a driven and passionate grade 12 student at Oakridge secondary School\, who plans on attending Western University to pursue a career in health care. He is the humble recipient of the Pillar Community Leadership Award\, Thames Valley District School Board Award of Distinction\, and the Ontario Volunteer Service Award. Eleanor Park and Rachel Gall will each give a short talk about what has made them leaders in their school and community.\nWomen’s Canadian Club\, London has established the Emerging Leaders Awards to encourage leadership skills in Grades 10-11 students. Based on enrollment\, there are three awards of $250 available for students in the Thames Valley District School Board and one award of $250 available for the students in the London District Catholic School Board or the French schools: E.S. She has held various positions with the Rowbust Committee and with Dragon Boat Canada. She was Co-Chair of Fanshawe Dragon Boat Festival. She was Instrumental with Rowbust in Dragon Boat Canada recognizing the Breast Cancer Survivor Division at the Canadian National Championships in 2010 and with Rowbust in the International Dragon Boat Federation recognizing the Breast Cancer Survivor Division at the Club Crew World Championships in 2014. She was eight-time Canadian National Champion in the Breast Cancer Survivor Division (2010 – 2017) and Club Crew World Champion in the Breast Cancer Survivor Division in Ravenna\, Italy 2014 and Adelaide\, Australia 2016.

SUMMARY:Dr. Jean Hewitt
DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Dr. Jean Hewitt & ‘The Suffragettes’: A Century for Women” \nJean Hewitt has been a teacher\, leader and author in Canada and England for over fifty years. Her post-graduate work was completed at the University of Toronto and Wayne State University in Michigan. Her undergraduate work in Science was completed in England at the University of Leeds (1960)\, and in Canada at Western. Jean has held a variety of administrative positions in Education\, including Vice-Principal\, Principal and Superintendent. She has lectured at a number of universities\, including Western\, McMaster and Lakehead\, and she has served as a Senior Project Officer with the Ontario Ministry of Education in Toronto. Jean wrote the first script for the Famous Five suffragists in 2007. In 2013\, she formed a troupe of retired women in London to perform this script in the community as part of public education. Since then\, the troupe has gone on to perform in a number of venues and the repertoire has expanded to include some monologues on other famous Canadian women.
