SUMMARY:Youth Speaker: Meriel Reed
DESCRIPTION:Meriel Reed is a 17 year-old student at H.B. Beal Secondary School in London.  She suffers from a severe medical phobia and has had to learn how to cope with the debilitating fear that she undergoes with every medical experience.  Meriel loves to sing and act and has performed on stage for productions at the Palace Theatre and for the Grand Theatre’s High School Project. Meriel has been a Patient Ambassador for Children’s Hospital for the past 4 years and speaks regularly in that capacity about the help she has received at the hospital.  It was out of these experiences that she created her own charitable project\, “Gypsie”.

DESCRIPTION:Our Youth Speaker for January\, 2019 is Mustfah Madlol. He is a driven and passionate grade 12 student at Oakridge secondary School\, who plans on attending Western University to pursue a career in health care. He is the humble recipient of the Pillar Community Leadership Award\, Thames Valley District School Board Award of Distinction\, and the Ontario Volunteer Service Award. Not only is Mustfah highly involved within the community\, but he also spends a great portion of his time helping coach Oakridge’s Track and Field team while also managing to participate in his school teams (i.e.\, basketball\, volleyball and track and field).

DESCRIPTION:At our October meeting we will be recognizing the recipients of our Emerging Leader Award\, of which there were three this year. Eleanor Park and Rachel Gall will each give a short talk about what has made them leaders in their school and community.\nWomen’s Canadian Club\, London has established the Emerging Leaders Awards to encourage leadership skills in Grades 10-11 students. Based on enrollment\, there are three awards of $250 available for students in the Thames Valley District School Board and one award of $250 available for the students in the London District Catholic School Board or the French schools: E.S. Gabriel-Dumont\, E.S.C. Monseigneur-Bruyere and E.S.C. Notre Dame.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Maples for Vimy”. \nSydney Loyst is a 16 year old Laurier S.S. student. She has been in guiding for 12 years. Last spring her guide group leader was approached by “Maples for Vimy” to send some guides to plant maple trees in the small towns near Vimy Ridge\, France to honour the 100th year anniversary of the historic battle. Sydney volunteered to go. The maples that were planted by these young people will serve as\nliving memorials to those brave soldiers who fought at the battle of Vimy Ridge. Sydney is here today to tell us about that experience. \nHer hobbies besides guiding activities are photography and baking. She hopes to further her education at university in the nursing program.

DESCRIPTION:Kevin Alexander is a Grade 7 student at Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts. This 12 year old has taken piano lessons since he was 3 years old with his grandmother\, Marlene Alexander. Kevin is a three time National Finalist and scholarship recipient at CMC (Canadian Music Competition). Kevin has won many trophies and scholarships at music competitions\, such as the London Kiwanis Music Festival\, Woodstock Music Festival and St. Thomas Music Festival. Kevin has been asked to represent various music festivals at OMFA (Ontario Music Festivals Association) and has placed 3rd\, 2nd and honourable mention in his various age categories. Kevin enjoys playing the piano at concerts and has had the pleasure of performing at the London Kiwanis Stars Concert as well as the St. Thomas Star Concert and the Woodstock Festival of Stars concert. He enjoys traveling to Europe to see family\, tandem bike riding\, playing soccer\, and in winter\, skiing\, snowboarding and hockey. John also plays the piano and cello and loves video games. He is a bit of a whiz at computers and video editing and is the “go to” person both in his class and at home. He attended Western’s Engineering camp this past summer. \nLast fall\, John entered Genworth’s Meaning of Home contest. He composed a poem in the style of Dr. Seuss and won the contest over 5000 grade 5 and 6 entrants from across Canada. Genworth donated $1000.00 to his school and $ 50\,000.00 to Habitat for Humanity in his name.

DESCRIPTION:Courtney Coleman\, 15\, will speak about her experiences as a model and actor. After modeling and taking acting classes in New York City in the summer of 2014\, she became involved with improv theatre. That lead to her stunt work in a short film which will be released this year. In November\, she was named one of the top five Canadian Young Performers\, in the category of Live Performance. Locally\, she is just finishing a run in “Jack and the Beanstalk” for the Elgin Theatre Guild and is rehearsing her role in the school play at Parkside Collegiate in St. Thomas.

DESCRIPTION:Jasmine Ryu Won Kang is 13 and in grade 9 at Central Secondary School in London. She is the 2015 Kathryn Sells Scholarship recipient. Jasmine won first place at the Ontario Provincial Finals for grade 9 piano in 2014 and received honourable mention for grade 10 piano in 2015. Last year\, she had the honour of performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the London Community Orchestra (LCO)\, and she also is looking forward to performing Bruch Violin Concerto in G minor with the LCO this December.

DESCRIPTION:Jackson Martin is a 15 year-old student in the French Immersion Program at Sir Wilfred Laurier Secondary School in London. He will be our Youth Speaker on Thursday October 8\, 2015 at Centennial Hall. Jackson is the son of Katherynne and Richard Martin and has been in 17 films\, mostly shorts. He attended the Cannes Film Festival in the spring of 2015\, for the world premieres of 2 feature films: “Sleeping Giant”\, directed y Andrew Cividino\, and “Boy”\, directed by Melanie Chung. He was the lead in both films. The feature film “Sleeping Giant” made its North American premiere at TIFF on September 15 to a standing ovation.

DESCRIPTION:Ellen McDonald was the winner of the 2014 essay contest “Proud to be Canadian” and is excited to share it with the WCC audience. Ellen was born in March 2003 and will enter grade 7 in September. She lives in Thorndale with her parents and 2 younger brothers. Ellen is passionate about acting\, singing\, and dancing and also loves to swim. She recently completed her first musical; Charlotte’s Web with Original Kids Theatre Company and will start on her second one this fall. In 2004 she advanced to the singing competition at the Western Fair and has qualified again for 2015. Ellen also enjoys public speaking and has advanced to the finals at her school several times.

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to have the opportunity for Ewan Hartman to both speak to us and dance for us. Last year he claimed a national Dance Masters of America title for eight to nine year-old boys at a competition in Orlando\, Florida. He took top honors in tap\, ballet and acro\, which is a combination of classical dance and acrobatics. His peers also voted him Mr. Personality. He promises to be most entertaining!
