Reminiscing on Fifteen Years in Yemen
During her time in Yemen where her husband was assigned as an engineer in Pipeline Engineering and Construction, Barbara taught at the Sana International School and taught English to Yemeni soldiers. She was President of the International Women’s Association for 10 years where she fundraised for Yemeni women and children. Barb worked cooperatively with several aid agencies such as Radda Barnen, UNHCR and Mother Teresa. In 1994, Barbara and her family experienced the start of the civil war between North and South Yemen, including bombings and scud missile attacks. She and her daughter were evacuated in May 1994 to Saudi Arabia on a US Airforce C130 cargo plane. They returned four months later after hostilities had ceased. Barbara will share some of her experiences of everyday life in such a unique country!
